Reinventing the Mini Arcade: A Custom Nintendo Switch Cabinet
In the world of custom gaming accessories, innovation often comes from reimagining classic designs. Our latest project challenged us to do just that: create a mini arcade cabinet for the Nintendo Switch that combines nostalgia with modern functionality.
The Challenge
Our client approached us with a unique request: design a mini arcade cabinet for the Nintendo Switch that could be easily assembled without tools or glue. This seemingly simple brief pushed us to completely rethink the traditional arcade cabinet design.
Starting from Scratch
Optimized for 3D Printing
Throughout the design process, we kept 3D printing in mind. While we couldn't eliminate supports entirely, we optimized each piece to minimize their use where possible. For parts that do require supports, we ensured they would be easy to remove without affecting the final assembly or aesthetics.
Each component was designed to be printed separately, allowing for easy customization. Users can print pieces in different colors to personalize their cabinet. The modular nature of the design also means individual pieces can be reprinted or modified without needing to redo the entire cabinet.
Thoughtful Details
We added a cord slot in the main body design, allowing users to keep their Switch charged while playing without unsightly cables disrupting the cabinet's sleek look. This small detail enhances both the functionality and aesthetics of the final product.
Challenges and Solutions
One of our biggest challenges was balancing the need for a sturdy structure with the constraints of 3D printing. We experimented with various wall thicknesses and support structures to find the optimal balance between strength and printability.
The tilting mechanism for the Switch holder also required several iterations. We needed to ensure it moved smoothly but also locked securely in place when the console was inserted.


The Final Product
The result of our efforts is a mini arcade cabinet that:

Accommodates charging with a specially designed magnetic cable holder
Can be largely 3D printed, with minimal and easily removable supports

We quickly realized that modifying an existing design wouldn't cut it. We needed to start from the ground up, reimagining every aspect of the cabinet to meet our client's needs.
The Body: A Snap-Together Solution
The cornerstone of our design was a body that could be assembled without tools or adhesives. We developed a system of interlocking pieces that snap together firmly, providing stability without the need for screws or glue. This approach not only met the client's requirements but also made the cabinet easy to disassemble for storage or transport.
The Nintendo Switch Holder: Functionality Meets Innovation
The heart of our design is the custom Nintendo Switch holder. We created a tilting mechanism that allows the holder to move back and forth, making it incredibly easy to insert and remove the console. Once in place, the holder clicks securely, ensuring the Switch stays put during even the most intense gaming sessions.
At the bottom of the holder, we incorporated a specially designed cable slot. This feature is tailored for magnetic USB-C cables, serving a dual purpose. It keeps the Switch charged during long gaming sessions and provides an extra layer of security to hold the console in place. The magnetic connection allows for quick and easy connecting and disconnecting without stressing the console's USB-C port.
